Why Signs Don't Work

Category: Park/Facility Planning and Design | Park/Facility Maintenance

Date: Wednesday, May 3

Speaker:
Steven Starlund, Kitsap County

Session Description:

Managers are frustrated about park users who ignore signs. With intentions to educate, inform, warn, and thwart misbehavior, a myriad of sign designs, message styles, and construction materials have been installed in hopes that more signs and sign talk will solve problems. Over years of experimenting with, and evaluating signs, and looking to understand the sign-psychology of park users, the speaker will offer why some signs are appropriate and effective, and why others don't work. Participants will be given sign critique tools, and learn 7 deadly sign mistakes. They will examine various sign materials and given sign-design, message templates.
