Phase 3: Examples of Inconsistencies of the "Safe Start" Re-Opening Plan

A Message from the WRPA Administration Network

As follow-up to the discussion we had at last Thursday's, June 11, 2020, meeting regarding Phase 3 of the Governor’s “Safe start” re-opening plans, and the limitation of 50 people on events and gatherings, the WRPA continues to work with the Governor’s Office on a way to look at these not just with a number but by ensuring safe protocols and social distancing and other structural ways of keeping people separated.

A group led by Roxanne Miles of Pierce County had developed a framework draft and events matrix. In response, Jon Snyder of the Governor’s Office has asked that we provide him with a series of examples of where that might be inconsistencies between the guidance and particular events and scenarios we will be seeing in local parks. Examples we have already developed include:

  • Group runs
  • Group bike rides
  • Concerts in the park
  • Events that can be controlled with access gates much as zoos are allowed to do
  • Events that can be segregated through the use of larger parks facilities and areas (much like the ‘fields’ exception that allows up to 50 participants/coaches/referees per field).

If you have particular examples we should add to the list, can you please provide them to myself (Travis Stombaugh), Pete Mayer of Metro Parks Tacoma, Roxanne Miles of Pierce County, Mary Dodsworth of Lakewood, and WRPA state lobbyist Doug Levy, by Close of Business on Wednesday, June 17, 2020.
