Youth Green Corps: Preparing the Next Generation of Park Workers
Track: Maintenance & Operations

Thursday, October 13, 2016 | 10:30am - 11:45am
Room: Building 30 | Officer's Club

Speaker:

Chukundi Salisbury, Trail Coordinator, Seattle Park and Recreation

Session Description:

There has always been a need to help identify the next generation of park resource and maintenance employees. Much of that work is traditionally taken on by organizations and entities via apprenticeship programs, but resources for those programs has dwindled. Many of the traditional entry level park maintenance positions  are now being filled by experienced workers who have many years in the field. Departments don’t have the general funds to help develop and train and engage young adults (i.e. 18-14) to develop potential workers for the organization or the field in general. This workshop will provide strategies and examples of how to leverage capital and project funding to develop community partnerships that result in youth employment, job training, environmental stewardship and completed projects. The end result is a young workforce with the skills and abilities to feed directly into your full-time positions.
