Description: Autism can be a scary term if you do not understand the complexity of the diagnosis, but it doesn’t have to be. Learn successful strategies and skill sets to implement in working with children with autism in learning to swim programs, sports leagues, and summer camp programs. Kids are kids regardless of a diagnosis. Planning, education, and patience will be essential in your success.

Learning Objects:

  • Identify characteristics of autism and how the brain and body process information.

  • Identify appropriate lesson plans to provide safe recreational experiences.

  • Replicate hands-on teaching techniques for safe and productive lesson time.

Speaker: Dawn Lewellyn is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and owner of My World Therapeutic Recreation Services, LLC proudly serving people with disabilities. Dawn has been working in the field since 1989 specializing in Therapeutic Recreation since 1998. Dawn has also served as a Marine Animal Assisted Therapist for children with disabilities. Dawn consults for parks and recreation agencies across the country on inclusion and adapted recreation program implementation.
